Conflict and Genocide Unit

Class/Discipline Addressed: Conflict and Genocide Unit taght by Ms. Reid and Mr. Grieve.

Claim of Growth: I think that I have grown in my knowledge of what Genocide is and how it has occurred throughout history.  I am also more informed on the difference between a conflict and a genocide.  I have leanred about multiple Genocides that have occurred in the past such as the Armenian Genocide and the Holocaust and Conflicts and Genocides that are occurring in the world today.

What this change looks like: Before we began learning about genocide I believed that Genocide was murdering people but that was about all I knew.  I now know that Genocide is the deliberate killing of a large group of people which can be a religion, ethnicity, nation etc.  I also learned that it is not just murdering people but there is also eight steps that are involved.

Evidence from other classes:  I am applying what I have learned in my other classes to develop and improve my understanding of genocide better by sharing my knowledge of genocide to the people around me which has benefitted what I know of Genocide since I can explain it to someone in detail.

Specific learning endeavor: The learning endeavor that resulted in this growth was the Conflict and Genocide Unit.

Purpose, process, and products: Two projects that were connected to the Conflict and Genocide Unit was the poster project and a letter to our members of congress.  The Poster Project was where I was to create a poster that brought attention to a past genocide that has occurred or create a poster that urged people to donate in some way to help out in the world where Genocide and Conflicts are still occurring.  The genocide that the poster focused on was the genocide that was in whatever book that we chose in language arts, in my case I read the book All But My Life by Gerda Weissman Klein and this book was focused on the Holocaust so my poster was related to the Holocaust.

The letter to our member of congress was about the Palestinian Israeli Conflict.  In this project we had to write a letter to our member of congress concerning the Palestinian Israeli Conflict and what we believe the United States should support.

Letter artifact: This artifact is my letter to my Member of Congress, Mike Turner.  This artifact                                                represents my views on the current conflict that is occurring today, the Palestinian – Israeli                                                   Conflict.  It includes primary and secondary sources and what I believe the United States should                                           do.

Poster artifact: This artifact is of my poster for the Holocaust.  It                                                                                                   urges people to donate and help a displaced person that may be                                                                                                     struggling due to a conflict or a genocide and it demonstrates                                                                                                  how the amount of Displaced Persons has increased greatly over                                                                                    the course of 60 years.

How artifacts exhibit growth: The letter artifact exhibits my growth is my understanding of conflict which is visible through my understanding of the Palestinian Israeli Conflict that is occurring today.  In my Poster Artifact it exhibits how I have learned about Genocide by exhibiting a new term that I have learned this year which is Displaced Persons.

Implication for future growth: Implications for future growth in my understanding of Conflict and Genocide would be being able to explain what Genocide is to other people and also explaining the different between a conflict and a genocide.  This shows that I understand genocide fully if I am able to explain it to someone else and they understand it.

How I will continue to grow: I will continue to grow in my understanding of Conflict and Genocide by keeping up with the news and see how it is affecting our world currently and seeing what is going on the Israeli Palestinian conflict.
